How old does a car have to be for classic insurance?

There is no single age threshold that guarantees classic car insurance across all insurers. A broker checks the vehicle and the policy's eligibility criteria. The historic vehicle tax rules are a separate test.
Is there one definition of a classic car for insurance?
Insurance eligibility depends on the provider and scheme. Give the broker the make, model, year, condition and planned use rather than relying on a birthday or the word 'classic' in an advert.

Is classic insurance the same as historic tax status?
No. Historic vehicle tax and MOT rules are government rules; classic insurance is a product offered under an insurer's terms. An insurance quote does not confirm historic tax status, and a historic tax class does not confirm insurance cover.
Check the current GOV.UK guidance for the car's build or registration date and circumstances. If London driving matters to your purchase, also check the registration with TfL.
What should you have ready for an eligibility check?
A short, accurate description helps the broker check the right schemes. If you are still shopping, say that you have not bought the car yet and ask what further information will be needed before cover can begin.
- Registration, make, model and year.
- Purchase price or proposed value, plus restoration details.
- Modifications, imports or other unusual specifications.
- Expected mileage, use and parking location.
- Driver details and the date you would need cover to start.
