Insurance for a ULEZ-exempt classic car
By ULEZ Classic · · General information
A ULEZ exemption does not remove the need for motor insurance when you use a car on roads or in public places. Check the vehicle's TfL status and arrange insurance for your intended use before driving it.
Does a ULEZ-exempt car still need insurance?
Yes, when used on roads or in public places. GOV.UK explains the motor insurance requirement and the exception for vehicles kept off the road and declared SORN. Historic status is not an insurance policy.
If you are collecting a car, ask when cover starts and whether the collection journey is covered. Arrange that before the journey rather than relying on an advert, a seller's policy or a ULEZ exemption.
How do you check a classic car's ULEZ exemption?
TfL lists two historic categories: vehicles built before 1 January 1973, and vehicles over 40 years old successfully registered in the DVLA historic tax class. Check the actual registration using TfL's vehicle checker. Listings on ULEZ Classic are age-filtered candidates, not a verification of exemption.
For a car registered outside the UK, read TfL's registration requirements before travelling. Resolve any mismatch between the advert, vehicle documents and the official check before buying.
What should you check before buying for London driving?
Treat the car, charging status and insurance as three separate decisions. A quote helps you assess the running costs before you commit, while the official check addresses the charging-zone rules.
- Match the registration and vehicle details to the documents.
- Check TfL status and resolve any historic tax-class questions.
- Describe daily use, commuting and mileage to the insurance broker.
- Ask about agreed value, modifications and overnight parking.
- Confirm the start date and covered use in the policy documents.
This guide helps you prepare questions. Your policy documents and the broker's explanation determine the cover available to you.
